In-Home Dog Training in Waldo and Brookside, Kansas City

Leash work on your sidewalk and the Trolley Trail, built at your house first.
Another dog turns the corner on your Waldo sidewalk, and your dog barks, lunges and drags you toward it.
So you cross the street on every walk. Every dog has needs that have to go somewhere. One of the biggest is being outside, sniffing the grass and the smells, a calm dog that feels off leash but is not. That is why leash work matters so much. I'm Andrew, owner of Good Dogz KC, and I do in-home dog training in Waldo, Brookside and across Kansas City.

You've tried the internet
You don't need more videos. You need someone to look at your dog and tell you what to do.
The internet is full of dog training. Some of it is really good. Where people get stuck is making it work for their dog. I've done the trial and error thousands of times, and I've built a system that works for most dogs.
How I train
Management
Stop the bad moments before they happen, so your dog stops practicing them.
Obedience
A language your dog understands, built at home, then tested on your street, at the park and in stores like Home Depot.
An outlet
When people say give your dog a job or an outlet, this is what they mean: your dog's natural needs to sniff, run, chase and catch get met, so the energy goes somewhere good.
It's easier than you thinkWith the right coaching and just 10 to 15 minutes a day, you'll be amazed how much your dog can learn
Dog Training in Waldo for Lunging, Pulling and Barking
Waldo and Brookside are walking neighborhoods. Most of what families here want is a dog that can handle the sidewalk: other dogs, bikes and people coming the other way. The leash itself can be part of the problem. As I put it, "barriers cause frustration, which causes reactivity." An excited dog that looks aggressive on the leash, and has been fine when it actually met other dogs, is showing barrier frustration, not aggression. That is why one of the first things I ask is whether your dog is scared.
From Your House to the Trolley Trail
Every session happens at your house, "because that's where the behaviors happen." Then we climb a ladder, one step at a time. In Waldo that means your own block first, then the Trolley Trail with its real traffic, then the Plaza as the bigger test once the walk holds. Your dog learns it on an easy step before we test it on a hard one.
Loose Leash Walking and Meeting Other Dogs
Loose leash walking starts inside, before the sidewalk. The goal is a dog that follows you, not one glued to your leg. "A loose leash creates a calm dog." When your dog is ready for other dogs, we work up to passing them calmly, a little closer each time. Down the road, the reward becomes the sniffing, the smelling and the freedom itself. If your dog locks on and starts to lunge, I interrupt it early, because "a dog mid-lunge is over threshold and learning nothing."

Questions I get asked
Do you train on the Trolley Trail?
Yes, once your dog has the foundation at home. We start at your house, then your block, then the Trolley Trail. It gets busy, which makes it a good test for leash manners and passing other dogs.
Should I walk my dog in a harness?
I do not recommend one except for very small dogs. A harness kind of lets a dog just pull. My default gear is a slip lead, an e-collar, or both.
Do you come to Brookside and the Plaza area?
Yes. I train in homes in Waldo, Brookside, the Country Club Plaza area and across Kansas City. We start at your house.
Can we train on the Trolley Trail?
Yes, once your dog has the foundation at home. The trail gets busy, which makes it a great test for leash manners and passing other dogs.
What training methods do you use?
I use a balanced, relationship-based approach rooted in emotional regulation over pure obedience. I avoid outdated "dominance" or "alpha" framing. Dogs learn best when they understand what's expected and feel safe. Every plan is tailored to the dog in front of me.
Do you work with aggressive or reactive dogs?
Yes. Reactivity, aggression, resource guarding, and separation anxiety are a big part of my work. I come to your home, assess what's actually driving the behavior, and build a program around the real environment, not a sterile facility.
Where does the training take place?
Training always starts in your home, then progressively moves outward as your dog is ready: home first, then your neighborhood, then public places. It's all about setting your dog up for success. I cover the whole Kansas City metro, both sides of the state line: Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, and Lenexa in Johnson County; Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, and Independence to the east; and the Northland, including Liberty, Gladstone, and Parkville.
